Could you make an "edit" link visible to those with the right to edit articles on the bottom of each article next to index, print, etc. That way its easier than going all the way into the admin panel.

That is something that is planned for a future release, along with a delete link.
In fact, the print/edit/e-mail links will be changed to icons, similar to other modules.
